The Office of Alabama
Attorney General Steve Marshall is inviting applications for the position of Director of the Alabama Department of
Forensic Sciences (ADFS). The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences
is an ANAB-International (ISO 17025) accredited State Agency with
eight (8) laboratory/medical examiner locations statewide and Headquarters in
Auburn, Alabama. ADFS is an independent State level Agency that provides
scientific results in support of Alabama's criminal justice system statewide,
while receiving physical evidence from over 450 different law enforcement
agencies in Alabama.
JOB DEFINITION
This is highly responsible administrative and professional work
in directing the Department of Forensic Sciences for the State of Alabama. As the
Director, this position is responsible for management and coordination of all
activities, development and standardization of new and existing procedures, training and inspection,
recruiting and problem resolution. The position must also work
with law enforcement and public officials such
as
police officers, District Attorneys, Assistant District Attorneys, Judges, and
Legislative members. Work is performed with independence and reports are accepted as final. The Director is appointed by the Attorney General and works
at
the discretion of the Governor and the Attorney General.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Directs
the
State’s forensic sciences programs to
include
laboratory services
and
death investigations.
Directs the work
of agency investigative, scientific and medical personnel at the central office location as well
as
all laboratory locations throughout the State.
Responsible for the
development of the
Agency budget and all expenditures; reviews
on-going Agency operations to insure expenditures are appropriate and within budget; develops and/or supervises the development of
proposals to generate additional revenues.
Responsible for the
construction, upgrade, maintenance and leasing of all
Forensic Sciences locations to include the central office in Auburn,
Alabama as well as
all other laboratory locations and offices as approved by the Attorney General and the Governor.
Responsible for
the overall recruitment and retention plan of
Agency staff, to include Medical Examiner and Forensic Scientist classifications.
Oversees the maintenance of
the DNA database system; oversees the maintenance of the
Alcohol Breath Testing Program to include maintenance and calibration of instruments and training of officers.
Responsible for
the review and development of proposed
legislation; works with
legislative body to explain legislation and/or resolve problems associated with proposed legislation.
Responsible for
an
overall comprehensive
scientific and technical training program
for all agency staff; maintains standards for
employees and laboratories in order to
maintain national
accreditation.
Represents the Agency at conferences; works with State and local officials such as
law enforcement, District Attorneys, Judges, etc.
on issues related to forensic science.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or
university with a Bachelor’s degree in forensic sciences, chemistry, physics, genetics, or a closely related field preferably supplemented by an advanced degree(s) in a related field.
Extensive highly responsible experience in toxicology, criminalistics and/or
medical-legal work,
including considerable experience in responsible management and administrative work
directing forensic sciences activities, preferably including experience in business
or public administration to include budget and personnel issues.
Note: Advanced education and/or certifications in a forensic discipline may substitute
for a portion of the required forensic sciences experience.
Salary Range: Commensurate
with experience
